Spring 2022 Garden

A collection of photos and progress of my 2022 garden. I will be growing a little bit of everything – vegetables, flowers and fruit.

March 18th

I’m a self taught gardener (with advice from seasoned gardeners and reading here and there). Every year I learn something new! I enjoy the process and the rewards.

March 26th (8 days later)

Carrots, basil, cherry tomatoes, corn, radish, peas… sprouted. (Yes I know root vegetables should be planted directly in the soil… I’m curious). No peppers… they like warmer temps. An entire tray of tomatoes didn’t sprout… either we forgot to put seeds or the seeds are too old or just no good (I did buy them 50% off and expired… ).

March 28th (10 days later)

Still no peppers… let’s see if a little heat will help…

April 8th (3.5 weeks)

April 14th (1 month later)

It’s warming up outside… time to “harden off” the plants. It prepares the plants for the wind, sun, and temperature changes the outdoors will bring.

I’ve been doing this for 30 minutes to a few hours at a time…

Today the plants spent 6 hours outside and did great! Partially sunny. 70-80 degrees. Light wind.

Full shade until the sun comes over the house.
Partial sun thanks to the spindles on the railing.
At night I bring the plants all back inside to stay warm. Transplanting will happen mid to late May here in Connecticut, after there is no danger of frost at night.

Checking in on strawberries, raspberries and rhubarb. These are all perinneals that grow back every year. The strawberries and raspberries spread like weeds and need to be maintained (thinned so they dont overcrowd – overcrowded plants wont bear as much fruit).

That’s it for today! Coming soon- preparing the garden beds.
